WASHINGTON (AP) — A doctor has said that if someone uses a drug to make Celebrex, they may suffer allergic reactions to it. That's because the drug is a pain reliever and is only given to those who are already taking it.
The Food and Drug Administration said the drug is not a new drug and that Celebrex is used only by those who are already taking it. The agency also said that drug's safety and effectiveness have not been evaluated in patients for pain.
But the agency says that Celebrex has the same risk of causing stomach ulcers as other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen. And it also said that the use of NSAIDs is different from the use of Celebrex.
The FDA said it has evaluated the drug and is reviewing the safety and effectiveness of Celebrex. The agency also said that the use of Celebrex is not intended to cause cancer.
"I would not prescribe Celebrex or any other NSAID for people who are currently taking it," said Dr. William F. O'Brien, a doctor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
